What are grippers used for?

Grippers are the link between the handling system and the workpiece. They pick up parts, hold them securely during movement and place them accurately. Typical applications include assembly cells, machine tool loading, pick-and-place tasks, test stations and packaging machines. This category mainly contains FESTO pneumatic parallel grippers, such as the HGPL long-stroke parallel grippers, the robust HGPD series and the HGPT series. Depending on the task, angle, radial or three-point grippers may also be used.

Selection criteria and versions

  • Gripping principle: parallel grippers move the jaws parallel to each other, angle and radial grippers open with a swivelling motion, three-point grippers centre round parts.
  • Size: determines gripping force and permissible load, e.g. size 40, 63 or 80.
  • Stroke: on long-stroke grippers such as HGPL the jaw stroke is part of the type code, e.g. 60, 100 or 150 mm.
  • Gripping force retention: versions with an integrated spring maintain gripping force if pressure drops; at FESTO often indicated by G1 or G2.
  • Position sensing: proximity switches or sensors can be fitted to detect jaw position.
  • Gripper fingers: are usually made to suit the workpiece and mounted on the base jaws.

Frequently asked questions

How do I determine the required gripping force?

The key factors are the mass and shape of the workpiece, the accelerations involved and the friction between jaw and part. Permissible values are given in the manufacturer data for each size.

What do G1 and G2 mean in the type code?

FESTO uses them to identify versions with gripping force retention acting on opening or closing. See the product page for details.

Can I replace an existing gripper like for like?

Yes. With the full type designation from the rating plate you can find the identical replacement in our range.
