What are flanged wheels used for?

Flanged wheels have a projecting rim, the flange, that guides the wheel along a rail. Trolleys and traversing units therefore run exactly on track without additional guide rollers or steering. Typical applications include rail trolleys in production and warehousing, transfer carriages, shuttle and transfer systems, oven and drying trolleys, gates and traversing axes on machines and fixtures. This category includes the Blickle BH-DSPK and BH-DSPKGSPO series and BS-SPK wheels in sizes from 75 to 200.

Selection criteria and versions

  • Rail profile: The wheel must suit the rail used, such as flat bar, square bar, angle or profile rail. Check tread width and flange geometry in the manufacturer's technical documentation.
  • Single or double flange: Single-flanged wheels are used in opposing pairs; double-flanged wheels also guide individually on the rail.
  • Material: Steel and cast iron wheels for high loads and temperatures, plastic wheels for quieter running and lower weight.
  • Load capacity: On rails, the load is concentrated on a narrow contact area – take this into account when sizing.
  • Type: Individual wheels for your own axles or complete fixed castors for direct mounting on the trolley.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need flanged wheels on both sides?

That depends on the design. Often flanged wheels guide on one side while plain wheels run on the other, compensating for tolerances in rail spacing.

Which rails are suitable?

Rails whose profile matches the tread width and flange of the wheel. Dimensions are given in the manufacturer's technical documentation.
