Ganter oil sight glasses, plugs and breathers
In addition to oil level sight glasses and oil level indicators, this group includes threaded plugs and sealing plugs, oil drain valves, breather filters and breather valves.
What are these standard parts used for?
Gearboxes, hydraulic power units, lubrication systems and tanks need to be sealed reliably, filled safely and checked regularly. The Otto Ganter standard elements in this group cover exactly these tasks: oil sight glasses and oil level indicators show the fill level from the outside, threaded plugs and magnetic plugs close filler and drain openings, and breather and venting filters equalise pressure while keeping dirt out. Filler caps, breather caps, vent valves, weld-on sockets and matching sealing rings complete the range.
Selection criteria and versions
- Material: aluminium, brass, steel and stainless steel up to A4 grade for corrosive environments, food processing and wash-down areas.
- Thread type: parallel thread with sealing ring or tapered thread, e.g. oil sight glasses with tapered thread.
- Function: plain sealing, sealing with marking (plugs with DIN filler symbol), collecting wear particles (magnetic plugs) or pressure equalisation (vent screws, breather filters).
- Special environments: ATEX sight glasses for potentially explosive atmospheres and Hygienic Design sealing rings for easy-to-clean equipment.
- Sealing: copper, aluminium or elastomer sealing rings to suit medium and temperature.
- Mounting: weld-on sockets provide a threaded port on vessels and tanks for sight glasses or plugs.

Frequently asked questions
When does a magnetic plug make sense?
Magnetic plugs are often fitted to gearbox drain openings. The magnet retains ferrous wear particles from the oil, which become visible at the next oil change and indicate the condition of the gearbox.
Why does a gearbox need a breather?
Oil and air expand as the unit heats up in operation. Vent screws or breather filters equalise the pressure and protect the seals, while the filter element reduces the ingress of dust.
Which material is suitable for hygienic areas?
Food, pharmaceutical and wash-down applications typically use stainless steel or A4 stainless steel versions combined with Hygienic Design sealing rings.
