What is servo pneumatics?

Conventional pneumatic drives move between two fixed end positions. Servo pneumatic positioning systems extend this principle: a displacement encoder continuously measures the drive position, a proportional directional control valve meters the air, and a controller moves the drive to any intermediate position. This combines the strengths of pneumatics, such as high forces in a compact design, with the flexibility of freely programmable positions. Typical applications include sorting and diverting, pressing and joining, dosing and handling with multiple placement positions. This category mainly contains contactless MME-MTS displacement encoders, potentiometric MLO-POT encoders and VPWP proportional directional control valves.

Selection criteria

  • Measuring length: the encoder must match the drive stroke; the length is part of the type code, e.g. MME-MTS-500 or MME-MTS-2000.
  • Measuring principle: contactless systems such as MME-MTS or potentiometric systems such as MLO-POT.
  • Valve size: the proportional valve determines flow rate and therefore achievable speed.
  • Drive: the cylinder or linear drive must be suitable for use with a displacement encoder and servo control.
  • System compatibility: encoder, valve and axis controller must be matched to each other.

Frequently asked questions

When is servo pneumatics worthwhile?

Whenever a pneumatic drive needs to approach several positions or smooth motion profiles are required without switching to an electric drive.

Can I replace a displacement encoder on its own?

Yes, provided you know the type and measuring length of the existing system. After replacement, the axis usually needs to be commissioned again.
