What are sensors used for?

Sensors provide the controller with the information needed for safe and efficient operation: is the workpiece seated correctly, has the cylinder reached its end position, how much compressed air is the machine consuming? The FESTO sensor range covers these tasks in pneumatic and electric systems. This category includes SOPA air gap sensors for checking workpiece seating, for example in machine tools, and SFAM flow sensors for measuring and monitoring air consumption. The range also includes proximity switches, pressure sensors and other sensors for position and status detection.

Selection criteria

  • Measured variable: position, pressure, flow or air gap, depending on the task.
  • Measuring range: for flow sensors the range is part of the type code, e.g. SFAM-…-5000L.
  • Switching output: PNP or NPN, at FESTO often indicated by 2P or 2N.
  • Analogue output: current or voltage signal for continuous measured values.
  • Electrical connection: for example M12 or M8 plug.
  • Connection and mounting: thread size, mounting type and design to suit the machine.

Sensors at KSK Components

At KSK Components you can order FESTO sensors together with matching cables, drives and valves, plus components from other manufacturers, so your automation parts can be sourced in one go. Registered business customers see their individual customer group prices after logging in.

Frequently asked questions

What is an air gap sensor for?

It uses an air flow to check whether a workpiece is lying flat on its support. Even small gaps, for example caused by chips, are detected.

What is the difference between PNP and NPN?

It describes the switching logic of the output. The version you need depends on the input card of your controller.

How does a flow sensor help save energy?

It makes compressed air consumption visible, helping you identify leaks and unnecessary consumption.
