Why motors and controllers?
Electric axes and positioning systems need a motor to generate motion and a controller to regulate position, speed and force. FESTO offers matched combinations of servo motor, servo drive and optional gear unit for this purpose. This category includes EMME-AS servo motors, CMMP-AS motor controllers and EMGA planetary gear units. Combined with FESTO electromechanical axes, they form complete positioning solutions for handling, assembly, testing and packaging.
Selection criteria
- Motor size: determines torque and power, e.g. EMME-AS-80 or EMME-AS-100.
- Holding brake: recommended for vertical axes so that the load is held at standstill; at FESTO often indicated by a B suffix.
- Encoder: single-turn or multi-turn, depending on whether the position must be retained after power-off.
- Controller rating: nominal current and supply of the motor controller must match the motor.
- Communication: fieldbus or Ethernet interface to the higher-level controller.
- Gear unit: ratio to adapt speed and torque to the axis.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a holding brake?
For vertically mounted axes or loads that must not drop when power is removed, a holding brake is generally required.
Can I replace an existing motor controller?
Yes, using the exact type designation. Note that parameters and firmware of the old unit need to be transferred or set up again on the new one.
